I find a biblical analogy helpful. Jesus claims “I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil” the law and the prophets, claiming that there is continuity between his project and Jewish tradition, despite the result of his life and teachings being, on many dimensions, a radical change in the way the faithful relate to God and the Law.
I think is similar to how someone like Nikole Hannah Jones imagines her relationship to America’s founding ideals: not as a breach or repudiation, but as a transformative fulfillment, brought about by genuine engagement with the black experience. Perhaps Yglasias is more sympathetic to this perspective.
